Saree Add on’s
What is Saree Fall & Edging Work?
Sarees come straight from the loom with raw edges and require finishing touches before they can be worn. Fall and Edging (Pico) make the saree ready to wear, protect the fabric, and ensure an elegant drape.
1. Saree Fall Work
What it is: A 3-yard strip of matching cotton fabric stitched onto the inside bottom hem of the saree.
Why it’s needed:Improves Drape: Adds just enough weight to the bottom so lightweight fabrics (like silk, georgette, and organza) fall gracefully without clinging.
Protects the Fabric: Shields the lower hem from fraying, tears, or damage caused by walking and footwear.
2. Edging Work (Pico / Bidding)
What it is: A dense, machine-stitched zigzag hem along the two raw, vertical cut ends of the saree (the inner end and the pallu).
Why it’s needed:
Prevents Fraying: Locks the raw edges permanently so the fabric threads do not unravel over time.
An inskirt (most commonly known as a petticoat) is an essential undergarment worn beneath a saree. It is an ankle-length skirt secured tightly at the waist with a drawstring or zipper.
It serves as the structural foundation for the entire saree drape.
Why is an Inskirt Essential?
Anchors the Pleats: The primary function of an inskirt is to provide a firm base. The heavy waist tucks and pleats of the saree are tucked directly into the waistband of the inskirt to hold the entire outfit securely in place.
Prevents Transparency: Many beautiful sarees—like chiffon, organza, net, and light georgettes—are naturally sheer. The inskirt provides opacity so the saree isn’t see-through.
Shapes the Silhouette: It defines how the saree sits on your body. Depending on the style, it can provide a traditional flare or a modern, sleek look.
Types of Inskirts:
1. Traditional Cotton Inskirt
Fabric: 100 Cotton or Poplin.
Shape: Usually made with 6 or 8 panels (kalis) that flare out slightly toward the bottom.
Best For: Everyday wear, heavy cotton sarees, and traditional silk sarees (Kanchipuram/Banarasi). It offers maximum comfort, breathability, and ease of walking.
2. Saree Shapewear (Modern Inskirt)
Fabric: Lycra, spandex, or nylon blends (highly stretchable).
Shape: Seamless and body-hugging, similar to a pencil skirt.
Best For: Modern drapes, net sarees, georgettes, and satin. It eliminates bulk at the waist, tones the thighs and stomach, and gives a sleek, mermaid-like silhouette.
3. Satin Inskirt
Fabric: High-shine satin or shimmer fabric.
Best For: Net, lace, or highly transparent designer sarees where the fabric underneath subtly peeks through. The gloss of the satin enhances the richness of the saree.
Quick Buying Tips:
Color Matching: The inskirt should match the base color of the saree as closely as possible so it doesn’t look mismatched underneath light.
Length: It should be about 1 to 2 inches shorter than the saree itself so it stays hidden at the ankles.
Fit: It must be tied tightly and securely at the navel—if the inskirt loosens, the entire saree drape can slip.
What is Saree Shapewear?
Saree Shapewear (also called a saree silhouette or skirt shaper) is a modern, body-hugging alternative to the traditional cotton inskirt.
Shapewear is a fitted undergarment worn beneath the saree or blouse to smoothen the silhouette, provide support, and enhance the drape of the saree. It can also help the saree stay in place and improve comfort throughout the day.
Key Benefits
Sleek, Bulkless Silhouette: Features a flat, wide waistband that eliminates the bulky waist bunching caused by traditional drawstrings, giving a smooth, clean look.
Targeted Compression: Gently contours and tones the waist, hips, and thighs for an ultra-neat, elegant drape.
Secure Grip: Engineered to firmly hold the weight of any fabric—from light organzas to heavy silks—keeping your pleats perfectly locked in place.
Easy Movement: Designed with a side slit or a flared bottom so you can walk, sit, and move freely with absolute comfort.
